Our sustainability commitments are elevated by ambition and rooted in science

Global challenges inspire bold thinking and our near and long-term commitments reflect the changes needed to transform our industry now and well into the future. In 2014, we established our first set of climate commitments, and exceeded them two years early. Since then, our ambitions and actions have grown, with significant progress toward our bold 2030 Sustainability Commitments and 2050 Net-Zero carbon target.

We've taken the additional steps to set emission reduction targets in line with rigorous climate science, with three sets of our goals validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), a first in our sector.

Our 2030 Sustainability Commitments

Our Gigaton Challenge

We're reducing one billion metric tons - one gigaton - of carbon emissions (CO2e) from our customers' footprint

The potential climate crisis looms in the not-too-distant future. The concentration of greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere grows at an unchecked rate. If this trend continues unhindered, big problems lie ahead for us all. We're here to challenge what's possible in the critical decade ahead. Our landmark promise: The Gigaton Challenge. We are committed to helping our customers achieve a cumulative 1 gigaton reduction in their carbon footprint by the year 2030. And we are challenging our industry and the rest of the world to join us. How big is a gigaton? One billion metric tons of emissions. It is equivalent to the entire annual emissions of France, Italy, and the United Kingdom combined. It's a big goal, but we are optimistic and ambitious. The need for climate action has never been more urgent. Bold action has to start now to bend the curve against catastrophic global warming. Heating and cooling buildings, as well as transporting refrigerated goods, contributes almost to one fourth of the total global carbon emissions. To push this curve down, our solutions help reduce the overall energy required to power the critical infrastructure our world depends on. Through innovation, we are advancing technologies to expedite the transition to a cleaner, safer, and healthier energy production future. We've deployed low-global warming potential refrigerants and are accelerating clean technologies to address these trends ahead of regulations. With low footprint and connected transport solutions, we reduce loss in the cold chain ensuring precious resources like food and medicine make it to their destinations and people who need it. Our customers trust us to help them build safer, more resilient, and efficient operations. We know we can meet the call while also providing positive outcomes for the environment. Sustainability is at the center of our business and we are standing at the forefront of a movement to solve global climate crisis. We are proud to be Trane Technologies.

Leading by Example

We're reimagining our supply chain and operations to have a restorative impact on the environment

The world’s resources aren’t infinite. Urbanization, resource scarcity, and climate change are directly influencing the way we live. With a purpose to boldly challenge what’s possible for a sustainable world, we realize we must lead by example in our own operations. To set the course, we’re improving every facet of our operations: reducing our absolute energy consumption by 10 percent, achieving carbon neutral operations, sending zero waste to landfill, and becoming net positive in water use. In some locations where we operate, watersheds provide drinking water to millions of people. Our goal is to improve access to this critical resource and become net positive in water use along the way.

By developing partnerships to aid in waste diversion and leveraging our innovative teams, we’ll recycle, reuse, remanufacture, and repurpose as much waste as possible leading to zero waste to landfills over time.

From building improvements, such as lighting upgrades, electrified heating, and automated energy management systems to leveraging the power of renewable energy, we’ve significantly reduced our carbon footprint in the past decade and we will continue work beyond these enhancements, investing in clean energy generation and improving our overall electrical grid. Finally, we will lead our industry in the transition to low global warming potential refrigerants. Another vital goal on our path toward carbon neutral operations is a 10 percent reduction in absolute energy use. We’ll continue pushing toward this goal by enabling our businesses to improve energy use by 3 percent annually, updating our operating system to integrate energy efficiency into our standard manufacturing practices.

Through extraordinary leadership and consistent action by our people, Trane Technologies will challenge what’s possible for a sustainable world.

Opportunity for All

We're uplifting our culture and communities through an inclusive approach and a focus on education and career development for everyone

Opportunity for all is about improving lives through action. It's about creating new possibilities and a better world for our people and communities through education, equality, economic mobility, health, and well-being. To change the world, we started from within. We know that inclusion and diversity increase effectiveness, productivity, and brings new perspectives to our company.

Our goal is to cultivate a workforce that reflects the communities where we live and work. That's why we're committed to increasing gender parity in leadership roles and signed the paradigm for parity pledge. Diversity and inclusion also extend to racial equality in our workforce. Our initiative to advance Black leaders launched in 2019 focuses on development, retention, and opportunities for growth.

We know that it is our responsibility to lead the change we want to see in our business, industry, and the world. To combat inequalities and injustice still prevalent in society, we are committed to cultivating and advancing community partnerships that support racial equality in Black communities and other communities of color. These investments enable our people to grow and advance while building the future of our company. Around the globe, our citizenship efforts impact multiple facets of our communities, including STEM and climate education, economic mobility, access to affordable housing, cooling, and comfort solutions, as well as healthy food and wellness. Through "We Move Food," we rally behind Feeding America and our ThermoKing dealers to transport perishable foods to 26 of the most food insecure markets in the U.S. and in Latin America. We're building healthier communities through quality of life programs for the elderly in China and by partnering with Solar Buddy, our people helped distribute solar lights so thousands of students in Tanzania, the Dominican Republic, India, and South Africa can study after the sun goes down. In 2019, we invested more than 5.4 million dollars in local communities to create high-touch and high-impact experiences for underserved populations and extend access to STEM education through partners such as Project Scientist and the National Society of Black Engineers. Collectively, these actions will transform our world into a more socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable place. Striving for "opportunity for all" is at the heart of who we want to be. We have a long way to go and we're up to the challenge.

We are Trane Technologies.

Committed to Net-Zero by 2050

Our 2030 commitments reflect the actions we are taking now to bend the curve on climate change, but our efforts won't stop there. Once we achieve our near-term targets, we will continue efforts to achieve our long-term goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. Our approach is aligned with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) and is among the first corporate net-zero goal to be validated by SBTi among all sectors. Learn more about our Net-Zero 2050 target and the steps we plan to take to get there in our 2022 ESG Report.

A coalition of accountability

Within and beyond our sector, we take part in coalition building groups and join like-minded alliances in the pursuit of a better planet. These coalitions help keep us accountable as we strive to do the right thing and carry out our goals.
